Action Research, by Ernest T. Stringer, is an introductory handbook for action research in the context of professional, organizational, and community research. Stringer is an experienced researcher with a background in education. He has worked on action research projects in Australia, East Timor (as a UNICEF consultant), and the United States. He has taught at the graduate level and written extensively on action research, and serves on the editorial board of Action Research Journal and is president of Action Learning and Action Research Association (279). He writes from his deep passion for and a wealth of experience in action research. The target audience for this book is people who work in the human services arena. This includes teachers, social workers, health professionals, and even ministers (xv). Stringer’s goal is to provide research tools and guidelines to help these professionals solve problems in their work settings. In addition to theory and resources, he includes stories from his experience in action research. One of the additions to this third edition is the inclusion of his work in the US and East Timor.A key principle of action research is that the people impacted by the situation (the stakeholders) should have a voice in describing the problem and should be empowered to help create and carry out the interventions. The researcher does not come in as an outside expert to bring solutions from far away, but rather comes within the community to facilitate community problem solving. Stringer challenges researchers to conduct their projects in such a way that every segment of the community is involved and valued. As the name implies, action research is about taking action to solve problems. This happens on a local level, and solutions and interventions may not work or even be applied elsewhere. The goal is local problem-solving, so, unlike most types of research, the results are not generalizable additions to the academic fund of knowledge.Chapter one offers a simple framework for Action Research: Look (gather information), Think (analyze and plan), and Act (plan, implement, and evaluation) (8). Chapter two expands on the theory of action research and highlights some of the core values of this type of work, such as the researcher as facilitator (24) and the value of relationships (28). Chapter three offers insight into setting up a project, including getting to know the context and identifying stakeholders.Chapter four (Look) outlines several methods for acquiring data. Stringer walks readers through the process of conducting interviews (including how to take notes), being a participant observer, and surveying documents. He also gives instruction on planning and conducting meetings (88). Chapter five (Think) explains how to analyze and interpret data. Stringer describes the process of categorizing and coding data (98) and analyzing key experiences (103) as ways to expose patterns and significant features related to the problem. He offers a handful of frameworks for interpreting the data, and concludes the chapter with a section on reporting. Chapter six (Act) covers planning and implementing sustainable solutions. Action research is about solving problems, so for the project to be a success, the problem needs to be solved long term. As in all phases of action research, the stakeholders work together to negotiate solutions and to take responsibility to implement the plan. Chapter seven addresses more difficult organizational and larger scale change. Some of the additional challenges in the settings include political processes and budgetary considerations. This also impacts formal reporting processes. Chapter eight offers several different models of reporting, including a dissertation model. Part of the challenge in reporting on a dissertation project is that action research differs in purpose and in methodology from experimental scientific investigation (169). Stringer outlines a reporting style that can help communicate to those who function in the more typical research framework.Chapter nine answers questions of the theory behind and legitimacy of action research. As Stringer argues for action research as a legitimate form of scientific inquiry, he points out the short-comings of “best practices†when dealing with human beings (194-5). He proposes instead to approach action research with more postmodern views of power and control, with key emphasis on giving a voice to every person’s perspective, especially those who have previously been marginalized (207).The book includes two appendices. The first is two case examples of different reporting styles. The second is a list of action research web sites helpfully arranged by relevant topics such as education, health, and youth. There is also a bibliography, and an index that helps make the book a good reference source for working on a research project.Stringer accomplished his goal of writing a comprehensive primer on action research for graduate students and researchers (back cover). He clearly writes from a vantage point of shepherding numerous students and other researchers through projects. He knows the questions that they will ask and some of the obstacles they will face (such as in reporting) even before they themselves know it. He guides the researcher from laying out the philosophy to walking through the mechanics and finally to reporting on the project.Stringer’s passion for insuring the involvement of the frequently overlooked is particularly important. His personal experience is invaluable in pointing out ways that well-intentioned researchers inadvertently silence key stakeholders, such as in the choice of a meeting location or time (88). He is also sensitive to the political and social dynamics of organizations, which is certainly an issue in church settings. I appreciate that his instructions are to take these divisions into account and work within the situation directly through preliminary meetings rather than trying to force the various groups to agree at one sit-down (87). I appreciate his point of view, but I am skeptical that consensus is likely in many conflicted situations (91),The discussion of postmodernism in chapter nine is interesting, but is likely irrelevant for many readers. People who are committed to doing traditional scientific inquiry are probably not going to be open to a postmodern perspective. Researchers in a position to carry out action research projects probably do not need to be convinced of the short-comings of experimental research in these settings.I recommend Action Research for anyone working for a solution to a problem in a community setting, including Doctor of Ministry candidates. The step-by-step guide is invaluable. The reporting section is an added bonus. The researcher will not only achieve a solution to their problem, but will also be able to report wisely to stakeholders, committees, and supervisors.
I keep hearing in my work a lot about Action Research, but I am still unclear on how this differs from participatory evaluation with an emphasis on qualitative methods. In other words, it wasn't really "new" information for me.
Great product for community research projects. Highly recommend it!
Purchased book for a course taken, came as promised without any complaints! Thank you
Very informative. I have the kindle version. This is a very good textbook for any psychology students. A lot of information and sometimes a little hard to follow when needing to bounce back and forth between chapters. However, I believe it is a must have for reference materials and to understand the basics of action research. Highly recommend
